Global Outage Hits PayPal, Affecting Key Services

PayPal has confirmed a global outage impacting multiple services, including account withdrawals and express checkout. According to the company’s Service Status page, the disruption stems from “a system issue” currently under investigation.

The company has stated

“Our technical teams are actively working towards resolving the issue,”

The outage, which began at 10:53 UTC, has left thousands of users unable to log into their accounts or process payments. Downdetector, a platform outage monitoring service, recorded over 7,000 user reports by 12:12 GMT.

Among the affected services are PayPal’s cryptocurrency functionalities and its peer-to-peer payment platform, Venmo. Frustrated customers have taken to social media to report login issues, often receiving an error message prompting them to “check entries and try again.”

PayPal, a global leader in digital payments founded in 1998, has grown its active user base to 432 million accounts as of September 2023. Despite its robust infrastructure, today’s outage underscores the challenges even major financial platforms face in maintaining service reliability.
